Nursing Annual Report
Editorial design · Data visualization · Narrative strategy
Organization: Unity Health Toronto
My role: Lead designer (concept, layout design)
Audience: Staff, physicians, learners, partners
Project Overview
Compiled Unity Health Toronto’s first Unity-wide Nursing Annual Report to showcase how nurses contributed to clinical excellence, education, research, leadership, and system innovation over the 2024-25 year. The goal was to create a comprehensive, engaging document that clearly communicates nursing impact, supports internal alignment and celebrates key achievements across the organization.
Challenge
Unity Health needed a way to spotlight nursing contributions in a single, cohesive annual report. With different activities and accomplishments across the three hospital sites, there was a risk of fragmented storytelling without a unified approach. The organization sought a format that would show the scope of nursing work while making it accessible and useful for internal stakeholders and professional peers.
My Role
Led the overall organization and narrative design of the Nursing Annual Report, from content planning through layout and final PDF output
Collaborated with senior nursing leadership to ensure accuracy, strategic alignment, and value framing
Worked with cross-functional contributors (nursing practice teams, education leads, research representatives, and communications) to gather, edit, and structure content
Made visual and editorial decisions around typography, hierarchy, section flow and supporting visuals that illustrated nursing professionalism and hospital wide achievements
Process
Conducted a review of existing activity summaries, program highlights, and quantitative data to map key themes (clinical practice, education, research, leadership, retention).
Developed a high-level content framework that grouped achievements into meaningful sections — Executive Message, Nursing by the Numbers, Year in Review, Practice Readiness, Education & Professional Development, Nursing Research & Scholarly Practice, Spotlight on Retention and Careers.
Reviewed visual layout concepts with stakeholders to ensure readability and engagement, while aligning with Unity Health’s brand standards.
Consolidated narrative text and refined key messages so that both quantitative data and qualitative stories reflected the full breadth of nursing impact.
Outcome
Delivered the final annual report within the organizational deadline, providing a polished, shareable document ready for internal and external audiences.
The report was adopted across Unity Health — used in leadership communications, staff engagement, onboarding materials, and as a reference for strategic planning.
Helped establish a narrative foundation for future reports, making it possible to build on this structure in subsequent years.
Takeaways / Reflection
This project reinforced the importance of clear narrative design and strategic collaboration when communicating complex, multi-stakeholder work. It also highlighted how thoughtful framing — combining data, stories, and visuals — can elevate the perceived value of frontline work. By grounding the report in both measurable outcomes and human impact, it helped strengthen nursing visibility, credibility, and alignment with system goals.
